ADVICE FOR HIGHLY GIFTED CHILDREN AND THEIR PARENTS The emotional intensity and the energetic curiosity of highly gifted children are often an undeniable reality, especially to their parents. In the Netherlands, schools are often unequipped to deal with these gifted children, and as a result such children often meet with specific problems during their years in school. On top of this, next to their intellectual skills and special talents these children have a special way of looking at the world, in quality, in quantity, or both at once. Not only is their way of perceiving reality different from that of the majority, the way in which they process experiences also is in many cases different, which makes highly gifted children often more intense and more sensitive. Highly gifted grownups can experience problems that are similar to the problems of highly gifted children. They too may feel the need to get some advice and guidance, the better to understand themselves, to function better at work and at home.
